Institutions

What is an institution?
It's an organization founded for a religious, educational, professional, or social purpose.

IPC Media
It's one of the UK's leading magazine and digital publishers, with a large portfolio of selling 350 million copies a year. They group the magazines they publish into five groups:

Connect - Women's weekly magazines
Inspire - Leisure and specialists
Ignite! - Men's lifestyle and entertainment
South Bank - Women's lifestyle and home interests
TX - Portfolio of television titles

IPC media owns magazines such as NME (new musical express) and Gutiar and Bass.

Bauer Media Group
A large German publishing company founded in 1875 is a privately owned company under management of the Bauer family; operates in 15 countries around the globe. They own magazines such as Q, MOJO and KERRANG.

I think that IPC Media would publish my music magazine because it's a British magazine that would fit into their ignite category as it aims directly at young male adults, giving them various amounts of male musical entertainment, rather than BMG which operates on a more global scale, because my magazine would feature more local artists than hugely successful ones, therefore it wouldn't be as successful.
However i have chosen to create my own institution called the Beat Media Group, because i felt that although IPC Media is a local media institution I feel that given their publication history, my media product wouldn't publish my magazine where as Bauer Media Group would.

1. What is a magazine? What is the definition of genre? How is the relevant in magazines?

2. What genre of the magazine you are going to produce? Research the history of this genre.

11. Write up a comparison of two contrasting music magazines. What’s similar/different?

12. Analyse the mastheads used on music magazine front covers.

13. Plan/Draw some ideas for a Masthead for your own magazine.

14. Get some audience feedback on your music magazine masthead ideas. Blog this.

15. Blog some initial ideas for your own music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread.

16. Pick a music magazine front cover, contents page and DPS that is similar to your idea, annotate the pages explaining why they are appealing and what you can take from them as inspiration.

17. Create a timeline to show how music magazines have developed. Consider the developments in technology/music genres.

18. Audience Research – research which music magazines people think are good, what attracts people to music magazines and what puts them off. Blog your findings. (Create a questionnaire and conduct Vox Pops).

19. Go to the Uk Tribes website and use them to define your perfect audience member. (Have some fun and find out what tribe you are too). Create a complete picture of your audience member, from clothes to the food they eat, music they listen to, TV shows they watch, magazines they read etc. You can get a friend to dress up in the appropriate costume and take photos.

20. Go to the ‘Rolling Stones’ website, look at the audience section. They categorise their audiences. Can you fit your magazine to their ideas?

21. Research the institutions that might produce and distribute your magazine. Justify your reasons on your blog.

22. Define the key conventions you must include on your magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. In order to conform to the expectations of a music magazine, the audience you have chosen and what is expected of a music magazine. Make a check list.

23. Create a flat plan for your front cover. Annotate.

24. Create a flat plan for your contents page. Annotate.

25. Create a flat plan for your double page spread. Annotate.

26. Summarise your final magazine idea. Blog it.

27. Take photographs for your magazine of a model/s that you can use on every page. At least 5 different images that are excellent quality.

28. Plan and collect all hair, make up and costumes. Blog your reasons for choosing the ones you have.

29. Make a first draft of all three pages for your music magazine.

30. Do any re-shoots and pickups needed.

31. Complete final magazine front cover

34. Post your finished music magazine front cover, contents page and DPS to your blog.
